Work on the parking area at Morrison springs began January 3, 2008
Dirt work and site preparation began January 3 at Morrison springs says District 1 Commissioner Scott Brannon. The cold, crystal-clear fresh water from the spring is an exceptional environmental and recreational resource. Morrison Springs has long been a popular area for swimming and scuba diving. Because of the natural caves at the bottom of the spring and the clarity of the water, Morrison Springs has been a destination for divers from all over the world. It is also used as an access to the river for boaters and fishermen. A concrete boat ramp and parking area for boat trailers and vehicles is planned south of the spring area with direct access to the Choctawhatchee River. Heavy recreational use in the past has taken its toll. There have been some environmental impacts on the spring. The bare dirt access and parking area runs off directly into the spring and surrounding wetlands. Boats launching at the spring cause erosion of the bank and further impacts water quality. The site presently lacks a designated parking area so vehicles and trailers are often left on the launch site keeping other boats from launching. This project will try to meet the needs of all users at Morrison Springs and protect the quality of the spring as a natural resource. Plans are to pave the parking area and build a board walk and new restrooms along with a new boat ramp that launches directly into the Choctawhatchee River in the first phase of construction and improvments.
