Oil and dispersants are coming into and out of the area with the
currents and can stick to and kill whatever sea life it touches.
Diving in oil is not recommended because oil can penetrate all
porous surfaces and could be almost impossible to get it clean.
It can deteriorate silicone such as mask skirts, and also
materials in fins and booties and it could put you in danger
with a standard regulator that is not specifically designed for
hazardous applications.
Divers are reporting oil below the surface, 30 - 40 foot levels,
they are returning to dive boats will oil sheen on their
equipment and some divers have reported feeling sick after
diving in the Gulf.
